Nairobi City (Nairobi) is the capital and largest city of Kenya. The city and its surrounding area also forms the Nairobi Province. The name “Nairobi” comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nyirobi, which translates to “the place of cool waters”. However, it is popularly known as the “Green City in the Sun” and is surrounded by several expanding villa suburbs.

The city is also home to numerous local and international businesses and organizations. Nairobi bustles with activity. It's a city that never sleeps; the rhythm is fast, day and night. There's always something to do and see in Nairobi and its people are friendly and hospitable.

Tourist attractions

Nairobi, being the capital of Kenya, is a central attraction for Kenyan tourism and local and international activities and events. Before you think of visiting any other part of the country, check out Nairobi's wide variety of interesting attractions and sights. Nairobi National Park, a large wildlife preserve on the outskirts of the city, is a major tourist attraction. Other points of interest include the National Museum of Kenya, known for a display on early humans in Africa; the Parliament buildings; the law courts; City Hall; McMillan Memorial Library; the busy Municipal Market and nearby bazaar; the Kenya National Theatre; and Sorsbie Art Gallery.

For locals, a typical weekend in Nairobi is very busy, from business/networking functions, sporting events and recreational activities to family weddings, barbecues and church events. The National Museum is located within Nairobi City and is an excellent place to visit while in the city. The museum is famous the Leakey prehistoric artefacts plus some of Kenya's best preserved tribal artefacts that date back hundreds of years. Other sights within the museum include well preserved birds, butterflies and animals and host of information about the country's rich past and culture.

Food and drink

Nairobi is home to a vibrant restaurant industry with interesting culinary choices. In Nairobi you can get quality Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, French, Lebanese, Brazilian and of course local African cuisine restaurants. Most hotels offer continental and international menus as well. Well known restaurants include Carnivore which offers mainly grilled meats.
Tamarind restaurant has a reputation of being the best international restaurant Nairobi. Tamarind is not cheap but with so much to offer, excellent service by are probably the most professional waiters and you’re ever likely to meet in Kenya, the Tamarind restaurant is a must-visit when you go to Nairobi. Seafood is particularly recommended.


Shopping in Nairobi is fun, easy, convenient and safe. With plenty of modern shopping malls, grocery stores, open-air markets, convenience stores and supermarkets located throughout the city, you will find enough choices to fit your budget and taste.

Masai market (which is an informal market) offers beaded jewelry, gourds, baskets, and other Masai crafts. More upscale handicrafts, artwork, and jewelry from all over Africa can be found at the African Heritage Center on Kenyatta Avenue.

The appropriately named Biashara (Business) Street is the core of downtown Nairobi ' s shopping district; it is made up of endless small shops and cafes. In the Langata area, the Ostrich Park has a craft center with an artisan's workshop where passersby can see items being made and enjoy a nice cafe.
